Using a website poll to improve your website
Creating controversy, divide and debate is a proven and effective method of generating website traffic. Stir an emotion and provide a means of expression and your website becomes much more than a static page of information. The concept does not revolve around the gawk factor of offensive and crude material. While that does work for some websites the idea is to create a spark which promotes interaction on your website, let your visitors understand something new about a subject they are fascinated with and entices the visitor to return and watch the debate unfold.
What type of poll question to ask?
In just about any topic area there are philosophical questions which don’t have a right or wrong answer. These are great for creating debate which can often become quite informative. Presenting a case scenario and asking a related question can also act as interesting content ‘What would you do?’ type questions.
Choose your own adventure
Let your visitors decide the direction of your website. Use the poll to ask your visitors what type of blog posts, photos, videos or even dares your website should offer. Don’t simply ask an open ended question but offer a few compelling alternatives. This provides the added advantage of targeting your content so it reflects what people actually want to see removing a little guess work. The more compelling and bizarre your options are the more referrals and traffic you will generate.
Product Testing with Polls
The likelihood of a product selling is difficult to measure without considerable expense. Creating specific poll questions can reduce potential risk in a number of ways. Firstly a poll can be used to gather feedback on the product or service. ‘Would you prefer blue or red widgets?’ Once this information is collected the question can be refined. ‘If we offered a blue widget would you buy it?’ type of questions can offer incredibly valuable information. Treat this information with caution and confirm its accuracy with other methods of testing if the risk is high enough.
Act on your poll
If you’ve asked your visitors a controversial question post a follow up response quickly and make sure your comments are insightful. If you’ve done some product testing let your visitors know if the results were convincing enough to proceed. If you’ve asked your visitors if you should take a bungee jump or go white water rafting you better post a video of the experience. Providing these types of feedback has a dramatic effect on the feel and tie-in your visitors experience in using your website.
